Play Jazz! workshop – Using Melodies
Saturday 2 June 2018, 2-6pm at Sage Gateshead
On the first Saturday of each month (except January and August) we run four-hour workshops in association with Sage Gateshead. Each one is different, and is usually facilitated by a different tutor.
The theme this time is using melody to develop solos. The tutors are Brian Molley (saxophones) and Stuart Brown (drums). Both are highly experienced jazz musicians, composers and band leaders, who have been playing together for six years in the Brian Molley Quartet. This session is suitable for all instrumentalists and improvising vocalists, and for those who can read music and those who like to learn by ear.
The workshop will explore the melodic and rhythmic possibilities of the following tunes:
Sonnymoon for 2 (Sonny Rollins)
Listen Here (E Harris)
So Danco Samba (T Jobim/V deMoraes)
Afro Blue (M Santamaria)

The Brian Molley Quartet will be performing later in the evening at The Globe.
The Play Jazz! workshops are intended to appeal to a wide range of musicians including those who
- play other styles of music but are new to jazz
- play written music but want to learn to improvise
- have not played for a while and want to refresh their skills
- want to meet and play with other jazz musicians.
Suitable for all instruments and improvising vocalists. Minimum age 16.
Each four-hour workshop costs £20 (or £18 for Jazz.Coop members). Ticket sales are handled by the Sage. You can book online here
