Play Jazz! workshop – Improvising – harmony and beyond
Saturday 7 July 2018, 2-6pm at Sage Gateshead
On the first Saturday of each month (except January and August) we run four-hour workshops in association with Sage Gateshead. Each one is different, and is usually facilitated by a different tutor.
The theme this time is Improvising – harmony and beyond. The tutors are Gero Schipmann (guitar) and Duncan Eagles (saxophones). Both are highly experienced jazz musicians, composers and band leaders. Gero says: “We’ll be looking at the tools of improvisation – such as phrasing, motivic development, scales, triads and arpeggios – within the context of standard Jazz repertoire. We’ll also be working on how to perform this repertoire to a professional standard throughout various styles of Jazz music (Swing, Bossa Nova, Blues, etc).”
The pieces we will be working with are
1) There Is No Greater Love
2) Black Orpheus (aka Manha de Carnaval)

- play written music but want to learn to improvise
- have not played for a while and want to refresh their skills
- want to meet and play with other jazz musicians.
Suitable for all instruments and improvising vocalists. Minimum age 16.
