Play Jazz! workshop with Swing Manouche
Saturday 6 October 2018, 2-6pm at Sage Gateshead
On the first Saturday of each month (except January and August) we run four-hour workshops in association with Sage Gateshead. Each one is different, and is usually facilitated by a different tutor.
This time the tutors are from the gypsy jazz ensemble Swing Manouche.
Gypsy jazz, hot club, swing manouche, jazz gitan … whatever you call it, it offers one of the most accessible and unique jazz styles. Mick Shoulder, Giles Strong and Gavin Lee will give expert guidance in the elements that set this distinct style apart from the more familiar jazz stylings.
The workshop is open to all levels and will start with a solid understanding of gypsy chord shapes and rhythm accompaniment (La Pompe) progressing to learning simple melodies and gypsy style soloing (scales, arpeggios and diminished substitution) and ending with a jam for everyone to practice their new found skills.
The pieces we will be working with are
1) Hungaria
2) Bossa Dorado
3) Minor Swing
