Play Jazz! workshop: Improvise on any theme

Saturday 5 October 2019, 2-6pm at Sage Gateshead

Guest Tutor: Richard Michael, Honorary Professor of Jazz Piano at the University of St Andrews.

Richard occupies a unique place in the musical life of his native Scotland, as he has the versatility to improvise on any theme, in any key and in any given style.
He has a virtuosic piano technique enabling him to give recitals on “The History of Jazz Piano”, encompassing every major jazz pianist from Fats Waller to Keith Jarrett, and is a master of stride piano playing.  A popular broadcaster on Radio Scotland since 2007, he has revealed to thousands of listeners the secrets of the jazz masters in his role as “Jazz Jargonbuster”.

Richard will also be presenting his popular recital History of Jazz Piano at the Globe in the evening.

On the first Saturday of each month (except January and August) we run four-hour workshops in association with Sage Gateshead. Each one is different, and is usually facilitated by a different tutor. The Play Jazz! workshops are intended to appeal to a wide range of musicians including those who

  • play other styles of music but are new to jazz
  • play written music but want to learn to improvise
  • have not played for a while and want to refresh their skills
  • want to meet and play with other jazz musicians.

Suitable for all instrumentalists and improvising vocalists. Minimum age 16.

Each four-hour workshop costs £25 (or £22.50 for Jazz.Coop members). Ticket sales are handled by the Sage. You can book online here
