Pink Lane Jazz Co-op, which was set up earlier this year following the closure of Newcastle’s famous Jazz Cafe, will be putting on live jazz on Saturday nights at Salsa cafe and tapas bar in Westgate Road, Newcastle.

The first jazz night at Salsa will be on Saturday 21 September featuring the Budtones, a well known modern jazz quintet that used to play at the Jazz Cafe.  Music starts at 9.30pm and continues to midnight.  Admission is free.

If this gig is as successful as both the co-op and the owners of Salsa expect it to be then jazz at Salsa will become a regular Saturday night event.  Bands have provisionally been booked till 12 October (for details see jazz.coop/events/).

Dave Parker, a member of Pink Lane Jazz Coop, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to put on live jazz at Salsa every Saturday night.  Since the Jazz Cafe closed local musicians and audiences have been missing a regular weekend jazz venue.  We hope this is going to be the start of a beautiful long-term relationship between the co-op and Salsa but, of course, we need the public to support it, so please come along and hear live local jazz in a cool, relaxed environment.”

Pink Lane Jazz Co-op aims to continue the commitment to live jazz, poetry and dance established by the Newcastle Jazz Cafe under the proprietorship of Keith Crombie who died on 29 December 2012.  Since the premises has been closed the co-op has been promoting jazz at other venues.
