New Jazz Courses for New Year
In January 2015 we are launching a new dedicated saxophone course as well as rerunning our popular guitar and multi-instrumental courses and workshops.
On Monday 19 January the new Saxophones Together course starts at the Globe (from 7pm to 9pm). The 10-week course designed for intermediate saxophonists wanting to improve both their soloing and ensemble playing. The tutor is Gary Turner, a highly experienced saxophonist and educationalist. The course will cover 1) creating melodic solos using a range of modes and scales; 2) playing fluently over a given chord progression and also reharmonising using substitutions; 3) building a solo on a simple riff/motif; 4 ) learning everything about saxophone technique including sound production and harmonics.
The Advanced Jazz Guitar course led by James Birkett is being run again by popular demand (the first course was oversubscribed) – fortnightly on Tuesdays, 5-7pm, starting 20 January.
The Play More Jazz! course, led by Judith Thompson, also restarts on 20 January (7.30-9.30pm). This 10-week course, suitable for all instruments, focuses on improvisation and playing in small groups. It is particularly suitable for musicians wanting to step up from jazz beginner to jazz improver.
The very popular monthly Play Jazz! workshop, held at the Sage Gateshead on the first Saturday of each month (2pm-6pm), will continue on 7 February (after a break in January).
