The Globe is silent

25 March 2020

This is an update on the actions we are taking and an appeal for financial donations.

We closed The Globe on 16 March, five days before the government decision to shut all pubs. We hope that our prompt action will have helped in a small way to save lives and reduce pressure on the NHS.

Since then we have been taking steps to prepare the building and the business for an extended period of closure. We are investigating ways of working with musicians and arts organisations to deliver ‘live’ jazz online. We are also making plans for a full programme of gigs, courses and jam sessions when The Globe does reopen, whenever that might be.

The coming weeks are going to put extreme pressure on our financial position. Our income comes from bar sales or room hire, and that is now zero. We have greatly reduced our outgoings and have negotiated reductions and delays in payments. We have no staff costs. However, there are some overheads that we cannot avoid paying.

We do not know exactly what government financial support we are eligible for or when we might receive it. We fear it may be too little too late.

We are asking our members, our friends and all supporters of live music to help by making donations to Jazz.Coop. A good number of small regular donations, say £5 a week, could make all the difference. Thank you to the people who are already doing this.

We look forward to welcoming you to The Globe when it reopens.
