Group Theory

Thursday 23 November, 7.30pm

New contemporary jazz quartet

Passionate about new music and crafting a unique sound, Group Theory perform original compositions written by their alto saxophonist, Daniel Garel. Completed by guitarist Tom Burgess, drummer Tristan Bacon and bassist Dylan Purches, the group met playing together in the award-winning Durham University Big Band and, whilst still at University, have continued to play together in a variety of different contexts. This variety has cultivated the group’s imaginative and dynamic musical approach to improvisation and helped form a strong sense of ensemble between the players.

Having studied with contemporary classical composers Anna Meredith, Larry Goves and Jonathan Pitkin as well as at Montreal’s Schulich School of Music with the jazz composer and saxophonist, Christine Jensen, Daniel’s music fuses the melodic distinctiveness of jazz with the modernity and rigour of 21st century art music. He has received international acclaim for his big band arrangements with airplay on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM and on his BBC 6 Music show as well as on the American electronic producer Bonobo’s LA–based NTS Radio. Expect new sounds from an energetic ensemble!
